Heading out for the first time to try sailing? We have a checklist of things to bring.
Clothing and shoes
Sailing is about preparation so its a good idea to check the weather and bring clothing suitable for the day. When out on the river we are more exposed to wind (and sometimes rain) so wearing a few layers of clothing that can be removed as conditions improve is best.
If you are sailing a dinghy you do need to be prepared to get wet up to your waist launching and coming back off the river. Our dinghies will get a small amount of water inside so choose shoes and trousers / leggings that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy.
Hat & Sunscreen
On a good day it can get quite warm and sunny out on the river. Reflections off the water mean its a good idea to put sunscreen on even on duller days in summer to avoid sunburn. In cooler months a cap or warm hat is a great way to retain heat if its cold or wet.
Glasses
If you need to wear glasses its best to secure them with a strap or clip onto your hat or clothing so you don’t lose them overboard.
Towel & change of clothes including footwear
Should you get a bit cold or wet out on the river its best to use the club changing facilities to have a shower and to have a change of warm dry clothes to be able to get into afterwards.
Gloves
Gloves are a handy thing to have but aren’t essential on your first time out sailing. They help you protect soft or wet hands and give you more grip when working with ropes. You can purchase gloves for around £10 from places like Decathlon.
Water bottle & food
Sailing can be good exercise and thirsty work. Its a good idea to take water or a cold drink out with you and to have something to eat afterwards.
While our kitchen and bar are often open after organised sailing events its a good idea to have something to snack on afterwards. Event updates will usually advise whether the bar and/or kitchen will be open. If arriving at the club by car Erith town centre has range of food outlets including a large Morrisons to grab sandwiches and drinks.
Wallet, phone & keys
For taking photos, buying a drink from the bar afterwards and calling friends/family to tell them what a good time you have. Its also useful to link up with club members and plan your next visit.
If you want to bring a bring a phone out on the water a waterproof cover with a buoyancy aid will mean it doesn’t get drenched or disappear into the depths of the Thames.
On a dinghy your boat’s helm (the person responsible for the boat and who will start off steering the boat) may have a small waterpoof bag with them to keep your phone in. Keys and wallets can be kept in lockers in the clubhouse.
The club bar accepts card payments with a low minimum payment limit.
