The Powerboat handing course is a two day introductory course designed to provide you with the basics of boat handling and seamanship of powerboats. It will allow you to safely helm and enjoy using power boats such as inflatable and rigid ribs, fishing, cruisers and day boats with outboard and inboard engines.
The course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.

Small tailored training – train with your partner or friends
At Erith you undertake the course with a maximum of two other students and one of our local friendly, qualified and experienced instructors. Taking the course as a couple or with two friends is a good strategic move. Both of you can then helm any boat you use but also the course can be a fun experience to do together.
Nationally and Internationally recognised
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course provides an internationaly recognised qualification that you can use to demonstrate the skills you have gained during the course. It is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for boats up 10 meters that is recognised by many countries companies and organisations internationally. Completing the Powerboat Level 2 course and registering with the RYA will allow you drive or hire powerboats in locations all over the world.
At Erith the course is undertaken in our of our club Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) and your qualification will recognise completion in a coastal location and experience with both planing and displacement vessels.
Once completed EYC members or sailors from other clubs may want to complete Safety Boat training to support our organised sailing events such as MAST and JYS
Using your powerboat qualification overseas
With your RYA Certificate UK residents can apply to the RYA for your ICC.
Completing the course at Erith now can be good preparation to spend summers spent enjoying coastal powerboating with friends or family around the UK or mediterranean locations such as Spain, Italy, Turkey or the many other locations that recognise the ICC qualification.
Inland cruising in Europe
With a short RYA CEVNI online course covering signs, lights, buoyage and regulations using the book RYA European Waterways Regulation you can also helm powerboats on European inland waterways and canals.
