Bill Smart (Ovens) Race Report, 9 October 2016

Sunday proved to be a lovely day with a gentle north/north-easterly wind and a mixture of sun and cloud (rain later).

The race was simple: EYC start line, leave the Ovens Buoy to starboard, EYC finish line.  The additional challenge was that Greenwich YC were also running their race so we ended up catching them up and racing round the same mark, but not necessarily the same direction round.

Hugh started us and off we went working out where the best tide was and the best wind, bearing in mind the moored shipping and the buildings with their wind shadows. Valencia finally left the rest behind but some good battling went on between Larceny, Fairtrade and C-Harp. Racing past a couple of GYC yachts that had run aground near the Ovens helped us not to mirror them!!

The race back involved a spinnaker-run that challenged the rules of sailing - Valencia managed to hold onto the spinnaker while sailing upwind past Thurrock before gybing off down St Clements/Fiddler's Reach towards Greenhithe. Larceny too used her spinnaker on three occasions trying to take advantage of the wind direction.  It was good to see Terry and Andy work the boat so well.

The chellenge was then sailing up long reach in very light winds trying to take advantage of the new incoming tide. Overall, it was an enjoyable race working the boats hard to take advantage of the tide, wind and sails....

Thank you to Hugh, Colin and Peter for helping run the race and to the crews of the boats for coming along to race.  I want to thank Alan, Jan, Steve and Jo for a fun day on the water.
