Dinghies at EYC

Training at EYC

Erith Yacht Club is an established Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised training centre. We are proud to have a full-time coach to develop a wide range of courses for members and non-members. Our aim is to help develop participants’ skills and confidence on and off the water, and get them involved in club sailing events.

Using the RYA scheme for youth and adults, our courses provide clear pathways from beginner to advanced levels in a safe environment. These sailing and powerboat courses use the Club’s fleet of dinghies, keel boats, and powerboats (RIBs).  All instructors hold an RYA Instructor qualification.

As well as dinghy courses, we offer a range of shore-based courses for cruiser sailors. This includes RYA Day Skipper Theory and Coastal and Yachtmaster Theory. Water-based courses are also available.

All this supports our wider sailing and racing commitments within London and the South East of England.

Our training brochure for the year can be found at the link below, and further details regarding the various courses can be accessed via the menu above left.

RYA VHF Operators Course

Our RYA Training Centre at Erith Yacht Club is the ideal venue to complete the RYA VHF radio course. Including the training and assessment for the RYA VHF Marine Radio - Short Range Certificate.

This course covers the use of a VHF Radio equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This replaces the previous VHF Radio Operators Certificate and is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

All VHF Radio users need to obtain this certificate to operate their radios safely and legally!

£85 per person for the course
An additional payment of £30 (payable to the RYA) is required for the life-long licence.
You will also need a passport photo on the day of the course

Under 18 Syllabus

The training scheme for the under 18s is designed to give you the chance to learn in a safe, controlled and fun environment.  Over all four stages you will get help and advice to make sure you can do the skills on the course before moving onto the next one.  As you progress through the stages you will learn how to rig your own boat, launch and recover it, and sail it competently.  As you get more confident you will be able to start racing with club members in cup races.

Sailing is a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends in a safe and friendly environment.  Even better, you can come with your friends and learn to sail together.  Membership is currently free for those under the age of 25, so this is an excellent chance to learn to sail and join in with club events.

The RYA Stages 1-4 can also become part of schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Take some time to look at the links on the left to the various Stages so that you can see what you will achieve on the courses, and the dates they are on.

Please note that the minimum age for a youth sailor to take part is 11 years old.  However, feel free to contact the Club Chief Instructor to discuss your needs.

We look forward to you coming to see the club and its facilities.
What Should You Bring Along To Your Sailing Course?
